Are you interested in trying something natural to treat your child’s ear infection? It can be tempting – who wants to overexpose their children to powerful antibiotics and risk building up a resistance to this drug?
However, “natural” shouldn’t be confused with “effective” or “safe.” Read on to learn about how some natural ear infection cures might put your child’s health in danger.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy relies on highly diluted preparations of natural substances, usually plants or minerals.
Scientists have studied homeopathy as a cure for not only ear infections but other illnesses. They have never reached a consensus as to whether they actually benefit the patient. Furthermore, the FDA doesn’t have a great deal of oversight in the field of homeopathic cures. So, there’s no way of knowing whether ingredients in a homeopathic remedy are safe.
Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic treatment involves manipulating the joints in the body so they are in alignment. Some people believe that manipulating the joints in a certain way cures ear infections.
While chiropractic treatment has helped many patients with pain in their joints, scientists have never been able to prove that they cure ear infections. Also, certain manipulations might increase children’s risk of injury.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (known as TCM) has gained popularity in the West in recent years due to its avoidance of medication and emphasis on spiritual healing.
Popularity should never be equated with effectiveness or safety. Scientists are continuing to study how safe and effective TCM, especially acupuncture, is. In the meantime, you can’t rely on it as a cure for your child’s ear infection.
Herbal Ear Drops
Herbal ear drops are an oil-based solution combined with extracts of anti-inflammatory agents such as St. John’s wort, mullein, garlic and calendula. They relieve the pain associated with ear ache.
There have been two studies showing that herbal ear drops reduce the pain that ear infections create. However, it’s important to note that they don’t cure ear infections.
